How to Prepare Your Car for Towing
When your car needs a tow, there are a few things you can do before the truck arrives to protect your vehicle and speed up the loading process. Taking 5 minutes for these steps can prevent damage and make the tow go smoothly.
1. Note your exact location. The most useful thing you can do is identify your exact location — mile marker (if on a highway), cross streets, or a landmark. Share this with dispatch when you call so we can route directly to you.
2. Turn on hazard lights. Keep hazard lights on until the tow truck arrives. If you have reflective triangles or road flares, place them 50–100 feet behind your vehicle facing approaching traffic.
3. Stay out of traffic. If possible, exit the vehicle from the passenger side and stand behind the guard rail. Do not stand between your vehicle and traffic.
4. Gather your essentials. Retrieve your phone charger, medication, insurance documents, and any valuables before the vehicle is loaded. Once on the flatbed, the car is secured and inaccessible.
5. Know your destination. Have the name and address of your dealership, repair shop, or preferred destination ready. This speeds up paperwork and ensures we go to the right location.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I stay in my car while waiting for a tow in Atlanta?
On high-speed roads, exit the vehicle and stand behind the guardrail. On surface streets, use your judgment based on traffic. Never stand between your car and oncoming traffic.
Can I leave things in my car while it's being towed?
Personal items in a towed vehicle are at the owner's risk. We are not responsible for items left in the vehicle. Retrieve all valuables, documents, and medications before loading.
Should I leave my car in neutral for towing?
For flatbed towing, this depends on your vehicle type. Our driver will advise — do not put the vehicle in neutral or release the parking brake until the driver instructs you.
What documents should I have ready for the tow?
Have your driver's license, vehicle registration, and your destination address ready. If the tow is insurance-covered, have your claim number if possible.
